August 2026 saw the largest leaks in GTA history and, fairly, in gaming history as well. Multiple clips featuring various aspects of GTA 6 gameplay were published for everyone to see and download freely. The leak wave continued for a week across numerous clips and prompted Take-Two to pursue identifying information through subpoenas involving Microsoft and Discord.
The clips showcased major changes to the GTA 6 map, wanted system, police AI, vehicles, looting, stamina, NPC interactions, and other gameplay mechanics. After the GTA 6 extended look on August 27 (gameplay preview), we now know the leaks were captured using an older game build and don’t represent the final game.
Here’s a breakdown of the mechanics and small details we learned from over a dozen clips. Overall, it’s great news for RDR2 fans, as a lot of attention was paid to the interactivity and realism.
GTA 6 launches November 19 on consoles, with the PC release date still pending.
GTA 6 map size, cities & locations
The August 2026 GTA 6 map leak shows a much larger and denser version of Leonida, with Vice City as its main urban center alongside smaller cities, towns, islands, bridges, canals, rivers, and mountainous areas. The world is much more dense. The Vice Beach first seen in the debut trailer is just as packed with NPCs and vehicles as shown in 2023. Awesome!
All roads and their proportions are now life-sized. Previous GTA games used very wide roads and/or downsized vehicles to make it easier to drive around traffic and red lights. Now, all roads are sized appropriately, making it harder to pass slower vehicles. Your driving skill will matter more. Also, at night, road light reflectors realistically reflect vehicle lights.
The map is about 2 times larger than GTA 5. Vice City itself is at least twice as big as Los Santos.
- One big city (Vice City).
- 3 smaller cities.
- Lots of towns.
- Countless islands, bridges, canals, and rivers, all interconnected.
- No desolate areas like in GTA 5. The map is bustling with places to see and things to do.
- A large military base on an island (based on Naval Station Key West).
- Mount Kalaga in the far north is seemingly bigger than Mount Chiliad from GTA 5.
- The community mapping project was spot on.
- There are hints of islands beyond the USA (Cuba, Bahamas?).
- A racetrack over 5 km long, featuring corners from several iconic real-life racetracks.
GTA 6 gameplay: new mechanics & features
- Realistic hair physics for all NPCs.
- NPCs will react to everything you do. NPCs react to you carrying weapons: put it away, a lady shouts!
- You can pick up any item an NPC carries, including melee weapons, trash, and hats. You can swap hats like in RDR2 and throw objects like in GTA 4. 🎩
- You can buy cigarettes to refill your Focus meter, similar to Dead Eye in RDR2. Shooting a successful basketball shot gives Jason +2%. 🚬
- Fishing returns from RDR2. 🎣
- The stamina meter is depleted with every intense move, including dragging out a resisting NPC from their vehicle. Low stamina can potentially make car theft harder.
- You can buy earbuds or headphones at a tech store to listen to music while walking around.🎧
- You can buy different cases for your cell phone.
- Jason’s arm rests on the car window. He adjusts the rear-view mirror and does lots of organic movements without interrupting your gameplay.
- Lots of non-lethal takedown options even when you are equipped with a firearm.
- You have to hit the button multiple times to drag an NPC out of a vehicle.
- Separate item wheel and weapon wheel like in RDR2.
- Consumables have diminishing effectiveness as repeated use temporarily reduces their healing effect. 💊
- Morality system with a devil icon appears after Jason continues attacking an injured NPC. 😈

Slow-motion kill & crash cameras
A kill cam just like in RDR2 and, on top of that, a slow-motion vehicle crash cam for significant high-speed collisions.
Cash limit & bank account
Your money is split into two parts:
- Cash 💵
- Bank account 💳
The cash limit you can physically carry in your pockets is around $20,000.
Robbing and looting
To rob a store or gas station, you have to physically open a cash register and take dollar stacks one by one. To loot a body, you have to search and take items one by one, just like in RDR2.

GTA 6 wanted system: six stars, cameras & police recognition
One of the most notable details from the GTA 6 gameplay leaks is the return of a six-star wanted level. The footage also suggests a more detailed police-identification system based on your location, vehicle, clothing, and appearance, while traffic cameras may identify stolen vehicles and trigger search zones.
The police now know details about you based on a combination of the following criteria:
- Weapons
- Vehicle
- Clothes
- Face
- Accomplices
- CCTV camera footage

- A policeman is seen grabbing a radio and calling for backup.
- Police flash their lights at you if you’re breaking traffic laws.
- Six-star wanted level returns.
- Traffic cameras trigger police attention. A highway camera detects a stolen car, immediately creating a red search zone and a two-star wanted level.
GTA 6 vehicles: fuel, repairs & car theft
The GTA 6 vehicle leaks point toward a more simulation-heavy driving and car-theft system. Footage shows fuel and engine-condition meters, refueling and repairs at gas stations, multiple ways to break into cars, weapon storage in vehicle trunks, and GPS trackers on some high-end vehicles. Stealing and maintaining vehicles will require considerably more planning than in GTA 5.

- Cars now use fuel, and you can refuel at gas stations. You can also repair damaged cars at gas stations.
- You can clone car keys, use lockpicks or a slim jim, or smash a window to steal a car.
- You can store weapons in the trunk of your car, as you can’t carry all of your weapons at once anymore.
- Car engine-condition meter.
- You can steal a car and pay a fee in an illegal shop to register it as your main vehicle.
GPS trackers
High-end vehicles have a GPS tracker that dispatches your location to the police when stationary. The tracker makes a distinct beeping noise when you exit the vehicle.
