If you’re into heavy armour or melee weapons, WoW Classic Blacksmithing will probably be your first choice for crafting in WoW Classic. Fortunately, Blacksmithing can be a great choice, offering plenty of utility and chances to generate gold, extending deep into the endgame.
But if you’re just starting out, it’s going to be a journey until you’re able to craft the best equipment in the game. Fortunately, this WoW Classic Blacksmithing guide will take you through the process step-by-step, serving as your blacksmithing guide, so you can plan your journey to reach mastery with this ultimate blacksmithing guide.
What is Blacksmithing in WoW Classic?
Blacksmithing is one of the many primary crafting professions in WoW Classic. It allows players to craft powerful armour, weapons, and other gear, making it a particularly good choice for classes like Warriors and Paladins, who use much of their output.
Once you reach level 200, you can pick whether you specialise in Armorsmithing or Weaponsmithing, a decision we will cover more later in the guide. (For those preferring to craft leather gear for classes like Rogues and Hunters, our WoW Classic Leatherworking Guide is a great resource.) This decision is crucial, as it gives you access to the best crafting options for your chosen specialisation.
If paired with the Mining profession, Blacksmithing can be relatively self-sufficient. Similarly, pairing Mining with Engineering can create powerful gadgets and explosives.
Why Should You Choose Blacksmithing?
If you’re using heavy armour or melee weapons, chances are you will get some utility out of being a blacksmith. You’ll feel these benefits both as you level and when you reach endgame, and are getting your hands on some of the most powerful raid gear in the game.
For example, Blacksmiths craft incredibly powerful armor, such as the Lionheart Helm, and weapons like Nightfall, which are pivotal for certain builds when raiding.
Blacksmiths also craft a useful consumable in the form of Sharpening Stones. (To further enhance your gear with magical buffs, check out our WoW Classic Enchanting Guide!) Both Elemental Sharpening Stones and Dense Sharpening Stones offer powerful damage buffs leading to greater output for you and your team, something which can be essential in end-game raids. Additionally, using powerful potions crafted through Alchemy can significantly enhance your survivability and damage during raids. If you play a Mage, discovering and equipping powerful Runes can also greatly improve your effectiveness in combat.
Ultimately, Blacksmiths craft a variety of unique gear and consumables which offer incredible utility for the classes which can use them.
How to Level Blacksmithing from 1-300
It’s time to get into the heart of this article: the levelling process. Levelling Blacksmithing to 300 is, like any crafting profession, a time investment. But if you plan and stay consistent as you level your character, you’ll get there in no time with this comprehensive blacksmithing guide classic.
Becoming a Blacksmith
Before you can level, you must first find a trainer in any major city and choose the Blacksmith profession. It’s advised to simultaneously take the Mining profession, as this allows you to gather your own crafting resources. Being a miner-blacksmith will help you level both faster, as you’ll always have great incentives to gather materials!
1-75: Apprentice Blacksmithing
Starting out, you just want to be crafting different types of stones. To get you from level 1-75 you can craft:
- 40 rough sharpening stones: from 40 rough stone
- 60 rough grinding stones: from 120 rough stone (Make sure to save these for later, as they are a crafting material themselves!)
- 25 coarse sharpening stones: from 25 rough stone
While you will feel a desire to immediately craft armour or weapons, this is not advised as low-level gear is very easy to come by, meaning you’ll likely be wasting resources (and thus time) in crafting your own gear at this point. Instead, by focusing on stones you create powerful buffs which you and/or your teammates can use to benefit you regardless of your loadout.
75-125: Journeyman Blacksmithing
Once you hit level 75, you can train as a Journeyman Blacksmith provided you are above level 10.
Here, there are a larger amount of items at your disposal, and you can begin crafting gear to use, if you desire.
One of the fastest routes to clear the Journeyman level of crafting is with some of the below:
- 35 Coarse Grinding Stones: from 70 coarse stone (Make sure to save these for later, as they are a crafting material themselves!)
- 10 Runed Copper Belts: from 100 Copper Bars
- 5 Silver Rods: from 5 Silver Bars and 10 Rough Grinding Stones
- 5 Runed Copper Belts: from 50 Copper Bars
- 15 Rough Bronze Leggings: from 90 Bronze Bars
Together, this will take you through to the level of an Expert Blacksmith.
150-225: Expert Blacksmithing
Provided you’re above level 20, at level 125 you can become an Expert Blacksmith. Simply find your way to Bengus Deepforge in Ironforge or Saru Steelfury in Orgrimmar to level up to expert!
At this point the best options for crafting are:
- 35 Heavy Grinding Stones: from 105 Heavy Stones (Make sure to save these for later, as they are a crafting material themselves!)
- 10 Patterned Bronze Bracers: from 50 Bronze Bars and 20 Coarse Grinding Stones
- 5 Golden Rods: from 5 Gold Bars and 10 Coarse Grinding Stones
- 10 Green Iron Leggings: from 80 Iron Bars, 10 Heavy Grinding Stones, and 10 Green Dye
- 25 Green Iron Bracers: from 150 Iron Bars and 25 Green Dye
- 10 Golden Scale Bracers: from 50 Steel Bars and 20 Heavy Grinding Stones
- 30 Solid Grinding Stones: from 120 Solid Stones (Make sure to save these for later, as they are a crafting material themselves!)
- 15 Heavy Mithril Gauntlets: from 90 Mithril Bars and 60 Mageweave Cloth
225-300: Artisan Blacksmithing
If you’re over level 35, the time has come to make a pilgrimage to an Artisan Blacksmith trainer. There is only one: Brikk Keencraft at Booty Bay in Stranglethorn Vale. So make your way over there to start the final leg of your journey.
Now, the fastest way to reach max level is:
- 10 Steel Plate Helms: from 140 Steel Bars and 10 Solid Grinding Stones
- 15 Mithril Coifs (or Mithril Spurs if you have the recipe): from 150 Mithril Bars and 90 Mageweave Cloth
- 20 Dense Sharpening Stones: from 20 Dense Stones
- 10 Thorium Belts: from 120 Thorium Bars
- 5 Thorium Bracers: from 60 Thorium Bars
- 15 Imperial Plate Bracers: from 300 Thorium Bars (Requires the Plans: Imperial Plate Bracers, which is a quest reward)
- 10 Thorium Boots: from 200 Thorium Bars and 80 Rugged Leather
And there you have it, this WoW Blacksmithing guide classic comes to its end. You’re maximum level and can begin your journey to craft some of the best raid gear in the game!
